Name: Maarten Weekenborg
Studying: Economics & Law
Hi, I am Maarten Weekenborg and will be the Commercial Officer of the EFR board this academic year. I grew up in Zoetermeer (best place of NL) just 30km from Rotterdam. After an enjoyable time as a care-free high school student, I started the IBEB course. Life got a little busier at that point. Student association, moving to my own place and being at all EFR drinks sure kept me busy. In my second year I joined the Commercial Team and had a great time organising the Career Fair to match students with the Small and Medium Sized Enterprises from Rotterdam and surrounding area. In my third year I went on an exchange to Madrid during which I really adjusted myself to the ‘tranquilo’ Spanish lifestyle. It was a great shock when I came back in the busy ‘handen uit de mouwen’ Rotterdam. Applied for board and luckily got accepted. If you are interested in my position or have any questions, feel free to contact me and we’ll drink a coffee!
About this position
The Commercial Officer of the EFR is responsible for the external affairs. Due to our centralised commercial structure, this means that all contacts with companies and sponsors fall under your responsibility. In practice this comes down to visiting a broad range of different companies, managing relationships and negotiating contracts.
The main tasks of the Commercial Officer are to finance all the EFR-activities, to represent the interests of the different companies, to manage the company network, and to support the commercial committee members of the EFR. Next to that, you will supervise the Commercial Team
The Commercial Officer constantly faces different wishes of organisations. By supporting companies in their recruitment challenges and involving them in EFR's activities, the ultimate goal is a win-win-situation. By doing so you have to be actively involved with all activities and events, in order to represent the interests of these external parties. Every decision made must be subjected to your critical commercial point of view.
A Commercial Officer is verbally strong, is able to write formally, is a good listener, is representative, likes to communicate and is able to negotiate. All the company visits and contact moments have as an effect that you get to know a wide range of different companies. You will be subjected to quite some time pressure, since the Commercial Officer is one of the busiest board members. Nevertheless, a year as Commercial Officer is a great challenge and gives you the opportunity to develop yourself in a many ways.
If you recognise yourself in this description do not hesitate to apply for the position of Commercial Officer of the EFR! Do you still have doubts? That is no problem: if you have any questions you can always meet up with any board member to talk about all the positions and get a better insight!
